How does my research help children?

I am interested in finding better ways to identify and treat children and youth who have trouble learning language, both when this is their only developmental problem and when it occurs along with other problems such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or other learning disabilities.  Some of my work involves using electroencephalography (EEG) and computer games to find differences in the way children with different kinds of language impairments process what they hear and see.  I hope this work will lead me to discover brain-based tests that will allow us to identify children at risk for delayed language development before they are even expected to talk, so we can begin treatment earlier.

Current Research

  • Measuring the contribution of auditory temporal integration and processing speed to language development in children with typical development, specific language impairment and autism spectrum disorder
  • Studying the overlap between different types of learning problems in school-aged children, with Drs. Lisa Archibald (PI), Daniel Ansari and Marc Joanisse
  • Testing the effectiveness of communication interventions for young children with autism, with Amanda Binns (PhD candidate)
  • Comparing adults with Asperger syndrome to those with nonverbal learning disability on cognitive and linguistic tests of integration, with Margot Stothers (PhD candidate)
