Research of the DiMattia lab focuses on the physiological roles of stanniocalcin (STC) hormones. STC-1 is most highly expressed in the ovary where its production is significantly increased during pregnancy and lactation. Interestingly, ovarian production of STC-1 during lactation is dependent upon the presence of a suckling litter, suggesting that it plays a role in preparing the mother for nursing. Ongoing research is aimed at shedding new light on the fuction of STC-1 as a possible factor in the health of newborns.
